Abstract

Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia Andrews) is a plant from the Orchidaceae family. This plant has economic value in food flavorings, perfumes, preservatives, cosmetics and medicine. Vanilla also has health benefits such as improving blood sugar, lowering pain, losing weight, and reducing depression and anxiety. Indonesians traditionally use vanilla for wound treatment. Americans use this plant for fever, impotence and rheumatism medication. Vanilla contains vanillin, vanillic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, and 4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde. Several research studies confirm that this plant also acts as an anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and aphrodisiac. The plant propagation of vanilla can cuttings. The review aimed to inform the public that vanilla plants have great potential as a raw material for traditional medicine.
